South Orange-Maplewood School District Supervisor To Be Honored With National Award

RESTON, VA, March 7, 2017 — Judy LoBianco, supervisor of Health, Physical Education and Nursing Services for South Orange-Maplewood School District (NJ) for over 13 years, will be honored with the SHAPE America Honor Award for meritorious service by SHAPE America – Society of Health and Physical Educators. The award, which recognizes recipients for their personal integrity, devoted service to the profession, and noteworthy contributions to the advancement of health and physical education, will be presented at the Professional Excellence Awards Ceremony on Thursday, March 16, during the SHAPE America National Convention & Expo in Boston. 

"Judy LoBianco is an exemplary role model for both her teaching practices and her willingness to share her knowledge with others in the profession," says SHAPE America President Jackie Lund of Georgia State University. "She has devoted her career to promoting healthy, active lifestyles for young people."

Serving more than 6,600 students in the nine schools of South Orange-Maplewood School District, she is responsible for high school scheduling, curriculum development, equipment and program purchases and staff professional development. In addition LoBianco was responsible for securing two million dollars in Carol M. White PEP grants in 2009 and 2013. 

LoBianco's colleagues credit her for being instrumental in raising the level of expectations for teaching, demanding physical education in schools have dedicated teachers who are held accountable by creating evaluation methods specifically tailored for physical education and health. 

Throughout her career, LoBianco has held leadership positions on numerous projects, including serving on the former National Association for Sport and Physical Education Convention Committee where she reviewed dozens of proposals for the annual national convention of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), now SHAPE America. At the state level she served as president of the New Jersey Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance from 2008-2009. In 2013 she served as President of the Eastern District of the former AAHPERD, which represents 13 states from Maryland to Maine, including the District of Columbia, Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. Currently, LoBianco is serving on the SHAPE America Board of Directors. 

Among her awards are the Channing Mann Award and the Everett L. Hebel Award, both of which recognize excellence in administration and supervision in physical education. Earlier this year the South Orange Maplewood School District received two Let's Move! Active Schools National Recognition Awards. LoBianco completed her bachelor's degree in health and physical education at Montclair State College and her master's degree in physical education at Montclair State University.
