North American Society Announces 2017 Honorees

RESTON, VA, March 27, 2017 — Gene White, chair of the North American Society of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Sport and Dance Professionals (NAS), recently announced its class of 2017 outstanding professionals. This year's honorees were recognized at the 132nd SHAPE America National Convention& Expo in Boston, March 16, at the Professional Excellence Awards Ceremony. They are: 

North American Society of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Sport and Dance Professionals (NAS):

  • Carol Ciotto, Central Connecticut State University
  • Steven Furney, Texas State University
  • Jacqueline Goodway, The Ohio State University
  • Dorothy (Dolly) Lambdin, University of Texas at Austin (retired)
  • Joella Mehrhof, Emporia State University, KS
  • Stephen Mitchell, Kent State University, OH
  • Marjorie Wuestner, School District of Philadelphia (retired), PA

Established in 1999, the NAS recognizes outstanding professionals from within the allied professions of health education, physical education, recreation, sport and dance in North America. Presenting this year’s honorees were Dr. Jackie Lund, president of SHAPE America-Society of Health and Physical Educators, and Dr. Louise Humbert of Physical and Health Education Canada (PHE Canada),

Individuals are members of SHAPE America or PHE Canada who have demonstrated outstanding competence through professional involvement over a period of at least 20 years.

“The North American Society is reserved for members of SHAPE America and PHE Canada who have made significant and sustained contributions,” says White. “Its purpose is to bring together recognized leaders from the various fields for the purpose of collaboration and gaining fresh perspectives on the latest issues and trends affecting the professions.”

Since its first class in 2000, approximately 160 individuals have been inducted into the society.
