Aims and Scope
Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport (RQES) publishes research in the art and science of human movement that contributes significantly to the knowledge base of the field as new information, substantiation or contradiction of previous findings, development of theory, or an application of new or improved techniques. The goals of RQES are to provide a scholarly outlet for knowledge that: (1) contributes to the study of human movement, particularly its cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary nature; (2) impacts theory and practice regarding human movement; (3) stimulates research about human movement; and (4) provides theoretical reviews and tutorials related to the study of human movement. Theoretical and meta-analytic reviews are by invitation only.
Manuscript Submissions
RQES receives all manuscript submissions electronically via its ScholarOne Manuscripts site here. ScholarOne Manuscripts allows for rapid submission of original and revised manuscripts, and facilitates the review process and internal communication between authors, editors, and reviewers via a web-based platform. Each manuscript must be accompanied with a cover letter which:
- Includes the statement: "This manuscript represents results of original work that have not been published elsewhere (except as an abstract in conference proceedings). This manuscript has not and will not be submitted for publication elsewhere until a decision is made regarding its acceptability for publication in RQES. If accepted for publication, it will not be published elsewhere. Furthermore, if there are any perceived financial conflicts of interest related to the research reported in the manuscript, I/we (the author/s) have disclosed it in the Author's Notes."
- Includes the statement: "All authors acknowledge ethical responsibility for the content of the manuscript and will accept the consequences of any ethical violation."
- Includes the statement: "This research is not part of a larger study." If it is, then authors must follow the guidelines specified on pp. 13–15 of the APA publications manual (7th ed.).
- Indicates the section in which the authors want the manuscript to be reviewed. Interdisciplinary manuscripts are encouraged, and authors should indicate the sections that overlap the manuscript content.
Authors are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to SHAPE America. All accepted manuscripts, artwork and photographs become the property of SHAPE America. As an author, you are required to secure permission if you want to reproduce any figure, table, or extract from the text of another source. This applies to direct reproduction as well as "derivative reproduction" (where you have created a new figure or table which derives substantially from a copyrighted source).
Advance Rapid Online Publication
RQES aims to publish your article rapidly online, to make new knowledge available to researchers in the shortest possible time with the posting of final edited, author-proofed, and citable articles in advance of print publication. Articles published rapidly online without page spans can be cited using their DOIs, or Digital Object Identifiers, in addition to the article and journal title.

RQES uses CrossCheck™ software to screen papers for unoriginal material. Please note that by submitting your paper to RQES you agree to any necessary checks your paper may have to undergo during our peer review and production processes.
Preparation of Manuscript
All parts of the manuscript should be typewritten, double-spaced with continuous line numbering, and margins of at least one inch on all sides. Number manuscript pages consecutively throughout the paper. Manuscript order: (1) blind title page (titles are limited to 15 words and running head are limited to 50 character spaces); (2) structured abstract paragraph of not more than 250 words, including headings Purpose, Method, Results, and Conclusion(s) and key words (up to four key words that are not also in the title); (3) text (uses APA format section headings and manuscript text must conclude with a brief section of up to 250 words titled "What Does This Article Add?" which should identify key message(s) from the study and how it adds to the body of knowledge but does not summarize the paper or repeat its conclusions; (4) references (empirical studies: 35 max.); (5) footnotes; (6) tables; and (7) figures. Original article must not exceed a total of 28 pages and Research Notes may not exceed 15 pages, including references, tables, and figures. Longer papers may be considered under special circumstances. RQES uses a double-blind review process which requires that manuscripts be thoroughly anonymous.
References
References, citations, and general style of manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA, 7th ed.) style.
Protecting and Labeling Research Participants
The RQES Editorial Board requires all authors submitting manuscripts for review and possible publication to obtain approval from the institutional review board or other institutional authority. All humans participating in the research should provide informed consent, regardless of the country's regulations under which the research was conducted and obtained consent must be noted in the manuscript. The author must include a statement that the institutional review board approved the research, or some similar phraseology. The Editor-in-Chief understands that such a statement indicates the author's guarantee of compliance with the National Research Act of 1974 (P.L. 93-348). All studies involving animal experimentation must be conducted in conformance with the Guiding Principles in the Care and Use of Animals of the American Physiological Society and a statement addressing this must be included in the manuscript.
Illustrations
Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are required for highest quality production and must follow these guidelines if accepted for publication: 300 dpi or higher; sized to fit on journal page; EPS, TIFF, or JPEG format; submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files.
Tables and Figures
Tables and figures should not be embedded in the text but should be included as separate files. Reference all tables and figures in text to indicate placement.
Proofs
Page proofs are sent to the corresponding author using Taylor & Francis' Central Article Tracking System (CATS). They must be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt.
Reprints and Issues
The corresponding author of each article will receive one complete copy of the issue in which the article appears. Authors for whom we receive a valid email address will be provided an opportunity to purchase reprints of individual articles, or copies of the complete print issue. These authors will also be given complimentary access to their final article on Taylor & Francis Online.
